GOOD MORNING, FRIENDS…

I hope you’re having a good week so far! Wednesday is Food Tour day for me, so as always, I’m excited to get downtown, and walk around, tasting food, and talking about the city I love! Yes, I still love Asheville. Do I love everything about it? No, not everything. If you want to have a conversation with me about it,

CRISPY LIKE A DORITO

My mom and I took a trip to Ziggy’s Bakery & Deli the other day, and it was hard not to get the Philly (best in town?), but I had heard that the Reuben is awesome, and since that is one of my all-time fave sandos, and I hadn’t had a really good one in a long time, I ordered one. Number of regrets: ZERO! It was frickin’ great!

There was plenty of meat, cheese, slaw and dressing, and all of it was sooooo tasty! The sandwich was piping hot. The corned beef was sliced verrrry thin and was cooked just right. The cheese was goopy and great. The kraut was the real deal. And maybe most importantly, the bread was crispy on the outside, “like a Dorito.” That’s the thing that my good friend, and great cook, Davaion Bristol says makes award-winning Reubens, and I couldn’t agree more. This sandwich hit all the nails on the head. Go get you one.

THE RECOMMEND

I know I basically just recommended a Reuben right above, but the official Recommend for today is the catfish from Haywood Common that I had last night. It came on a tray, which all of their food does now, and there were three big pieces of cornmeal battered and deep-fried catfish, that were super crispy and crunchy on the outside, and steaming hot and moist on the inside. The flavor of the batter, and the “Cajun remoulade” sauce on top were both great. I might ask for a little extra sauce next time.

That cornbread ain’t no joke, either! It was delicious!

If you’re a fan of fried catfish, I highly recommend this version from Haywood Common.

FAQ - DO YOU WRITE NEGATIVE REVIEWS?

I guess some guy on WAX thought he’d take a poke at me with this passive-aggressive comment…

Just in case you’re not catching it: He’s implying that I write fluff pieces about food, whether it’s good or not, or at the very least, that I don’t have a discerning palate.

While it might seem that way to the casual reader, because I only write positive reviews, and I write a lot of them, I absolutely do get meals and dishes that I “didn’t love,” because they are bad, or boring, or just fall flat for whatever reason. And yeah, no, I don’t write about those. Why would I? That’s what Yelp is for. It’s for assholes who write bad reviews of restaurants. I’m not one of those. I used to be! For sure. But not anymore.

I decided a lotta years ago, that’s just not the role I want to play in this town. “Oh, here comes that asshole,” is not what I want restaurant owners and staff to think when I walk in the door of their establishments, and hey, they might think that about me, I don’t know! LOL But I’d rather that they think, “Here comes Stu, I hope he likes our food enough to recommend it.
