Y’all…
When I first moved to this little city in 2005, from Chicago, Illinois, I thought I might eventually get bored with Asheville, and in particular, I thought I might run out of restaurants to eat at. 20 years later, neither of those things has happened…
NEW RESTAURANT!
I went to the media opening of Xico Asheville the other night, and I have nothing but good things to say about it so far! First, we were greeted by familiar faces, people that we know from other restaurants and bars around town. That’s always nice. Also, the decor is very nice! Sort of dark and romantic, with just enough edginess to make it interesting. Not bad for the old Foam & Fabric store! 😂 Next, the small bites of food offered on trays were super delish. Paddy and I actually locked eyes from way across the room and made, “that was really fucking tasty” faces at each other. The mocktail we had was a little sweet, a little tart and slightly bitter and very tasty.
I met the owners, Dave McFarland and Executive Chef Scott Linquist, along with the chef’s wife Alex Guerra, all of whom were very nice. Chef seems like he’s got just as much personality as he does talent, and a good sense of humor too. Anyhoo, I love going to media events, but they are not usually the best way to experience a restaurant, so I will return to Xico, and get back to you after I’ve had a proper sit down meal. For now I’ll just say, welcome to the neighborhood, I’m excited to explore the menu!
EGGS! EGGS! EGGS!
If you’re looking to eat some eggs, Boy Howdy, I’ve got 3 solid suggestions for you! The breakfast sandwich at BRÜ AVL is super delish, with sausage, cheese, a slightly spicy aioli, and a perfectly cooked sunny-up egg on a brioche bun. I also found it to be very filling and I even gave half to my breakfast buddy and was still full.
Next, my mom and I took a trip to Michelin Guide recognized (and multiple Stoobie Award winning!) Sunny Point Café where I got a whoppin’ big seasonal omelette that had squash and goat cheese folded up inside. Again, verrrry filling. I chose to crush my grits and bring half of my omelette & my whole biscuit home for later. I love the biscuits at Sunny Point!
Finally, Dawn got the avocado toast at Liberty House Coffee and Café one recent Friday morning. I didn’t try it myself, but it looked delish, and Dawn ate every bite!
I’ll try to find even more eggsciting egg dishes... yes I just said that... out there in the world to highlight, and if you are aware of a particularly good one, please let me know about it!
“Have you been to Eggs Rancheros Kitchen yet? It needs to be on your radar if not! So delicious!” - JC Stokes
No I haven’t, but I will try it soon!
LET’S GET SEASONAL!
It’s apple cider doughnut season at The Times Bar & Coffee Shop! I love their coffee, especially the espresso beverages, and I’m nuts about these doughnuts! They’re cakey, and sweet, and cinnamon-y, and so so delicious! They remind me of being a little kid in New England! The tiny town I grew up in had a large apple orchard, where you could pick your own, shop at the country store, and in the Fall, you could get hot apple cider and apple cider doughnuts. It was the greatest thing ever! FYI - The baristas at the Times Bar might even heat your doughnut up for you if you ask nicely. 🙂
HELPING OUT BY PIGGING OUT
I was so happy to hear that the good folks from Meals on Wheels of Asheville & Buncombe County had lunch at BRÜ AVL, where the amazing Smüben (1/2 Smashburger 1/2 Reuben) is on the menu for the rest of the month, helping to raise money and awareness for this wonderful organization.
“It’s official, Meals on Wheels 💙’s Brü! Delicious food, awesome people, beautiful space. Show Brü some love for supporting Meals on Wheels AND serving up the goodness!” - Nikki H.
Time is running out to get your Smüben at Brü Asheville and help support Meals on Wheels of Asheville & Buncombe County when they need it most! It is only available until November 30th, so you’d better pounce!
A portion of the sale of each Smüben will be donated to Meals on Wheels of Asheville & Buncombe County.
Thank you as always for reading this far! If you eat something good, let me know about it!
